George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue

This is my first post from the Powerbook. Initially a software and font-lacking shell, it has now been imbued with Adobe CS, courtesy of Tim and Google. Slowly but surely, I will mold my Powerbook into the ultimate typeface library that will cast a shadow on even the most extensive graphic designers' Macs. In the meantime, I need a word processor, lol. And a sleeve. And a mouse.

My humanities professor doesn't know why we have seasons; worse, he thinks he does. During a recent lecture on Norse pagan religions and how they worshipped the winter solstice (which eventually became the modern-day Christmas), my professor specifically illustrated that the winter solstice was the day of the year when the Earth is farthest from the Sun, hence it is the beginning of winter. Seriously. :-/
I have my first astronomy test today. Hopefully I'll do better than he would.

Lucasfilm recently released an awesome 45-image gallery of Revenge of the Sith screenshots and BTS photos for Hyperspace (Official Star Wars Fan Club) members only. I thought I'd share one of them with you, even though it's *cough* not entirely legal for me to do so. Hyperspace members get to see the theatrical trailer in 11 days! w00t!

ph7 - City Lights

My friend Max from most of my CSUN art classes so far has always told me he plays bass in a band he and his high school buddies started called ph7; I never really looked into it much. When I learned they'd be playing at the Whiskey tonight, I didn't want to miss the opportunity of hearing them perform, and since I needed to see a live musical performance for a paper I have to write for humanities, I decided to go. Holy crap, they were fantastic. While it's more of a softer rock than I'm used to hearing, their music is pretty high caliber, which is surprising since they're so unknown; Steph, their lead singer, is one of the best I've ever heard. They keep it up, they'll be famous someday. I'll definitely check out a future performance of theirs and bring some people with me. However, since my humanities professor isn't big on modern music, I'll probably pick a different performance to write about. Maybe I'll check up on the CSUN Youth Orchestra and see how they're doing without me. :)

Oh, and they were also holding the premiere for Constantine at the Grauman's, so I walked up and took a look from the sidelines. When Keanu Reeves' limo pulled up, he went around to greet all the fans. I was two feet away from him and I had no camera or anything for him to sign. Second time I've seen Keanu now. Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani were there too, but I didn't get a good look at them.

Yes, that's a crappy drawing I did of an airplane eating a tree. I was inspired when someone used the term "airplane eating tree" to describe a tree in which his toy airplane got stuck. Hey, I was bored and needed some practice with the pen tool in Illustrator.

Pras featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard & Mya - Ghetto Superstar

Magical Trevor 2!!! OMFG HELL YES!!! HE'S BACK!!! (in case if you've been living under a rock, the original)

He's back, and he's got a new trick
Magical Trevor is ten times as slick
As the last time, the last time you saw him
Now you can see why we really adore him

You might think he's putrid, he's sick
Sawing a pigeon in half with a stick
Look at the pigeon, now it's in two
Oh my, it's rear end is having a poo

Look at the mess in Aisle 2
Aisle 2, that's the place where we saw the Ragu
There's so much Ragu

My astronomy class is full of idiots. I don't mean that as anything against the professor, who I can tell is very intelligent, or the class, which I can tell is very rewarding, but I've now had four classes and it astounds me how totally ignorant the other students are. My first day in class, some guy asked, "Why are stars so far away?" (although I think he might have been joking) and in my second class, during a basic lecture on the tilt of the Earth's axis and the seasons, it became apparent that most of the class thought the cause of seasons was that we were closer to the Sun. On Tuesday, during a recap of the lecture we had already covered, a girl asked, "Wait, so the Southern Hemisphere actually has different seasons?" Later, another guy asked if people at the equator ever get any nighttime from their 24-hour sunlight. Today, after an entire lecture on how we can never get any more than two eclipses a year spaced six months apart due to the tilt in the lunar plane, my professor pointed out that since there will be an eclipse this April, there can't be one in July. Then someone asked, "Why is that?" Seriously. This is straight out of Zoolander. "But why male models?"

My humanities professor sometimes gets on my nerves. He tends to brush the students off as being uncultured fools, which isn't entirely untrue in most cases, but it gives him an ego trip. Today, during a lecture/discussion on beauty, he brought out a stereo and played us music that he found beautiful. First he played us Vivaldi's "Winter" from the Four Seasons concerto. Of course as we all know, the piece is in minor key with an unusually fast tempo that was characteristic of much of the music from the Baroque and Classical periods, of which he made note and pointed out that the key makes it sound "sad." Then he played us Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight," a slow rock song written as an ode to his wife's beauty. My professor went on and on about how this song differed from Vivaldi's "Winter" in that although it is slow and in minor key, its use of lyrics makes the song uplifting and not sad. It's in fucking G Major. I even raised my hand and told him, and he gave me a weird look like I was insane said, "No, it's in minor key." I can understand that one with a passing knowledge of music could be mistaken in thinking Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" is in minor key as it is slow and languid, but this is a college professor who comes off as egotistical in his profound choice in music and spends half a lecture talking about how a song that's in G fucking Major is minor key.

Ciara featuring Missy Elliot - One, Two Step

Green Day lightens up, deviates from their hard punk rock roots, and bashes George W. Bush, and what does that get them? A return to global superstardom and an astounding six Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
What happened? Is this the same band that made that sad excuse of a crap pile Shenanigans? American Idiot has been out for 20 weeks now, and it's still on top of the charts (last week it was #2). Their single "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is currently the #1 most downloaded song on iTunes. Green Day has returned as the biggest rock group in the world, and while their sales don't quite match the phenomenon that was Dookie, they've reached an audience so enormous they've caught the eye of the Grammies and will likely rake in the awards.
I must admit my first impression with this album was very bitter as I was expecting something more like their music a decade ago, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. It's not bad, in fact it's great, I just had no idea it would be this BIG.

My graphic design professor knows Drew Struzan! In a little questionnaire he had us fill out so as to better get to know us, he asked us to list our favorite artist and why we liked them. I wrote about Drew Struzan and how I loved his enormous repertoire of artwork which has adorned my walls for years. He later told me that when his design studio worked on the packaging for the Indiana Jones video games, he collaborated with Drew Struzan for the cover artwork. Kickass.

The absolute last day of filming for a Star Wars movie was the January 31st pickup shoots at Elstree Studios, where the original Star Wars began production twenty-eight years ago. Last week, John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra recorded the music for Episode III, the final Star Wars soundtrack. This is the home stretch, people!

There are now exactly 100 days left until the release of the final Star Wars film!

Gary Numan - Cars

Well, Iraqi elections have gone off without a hitch. Despite the risk of suicide bombers attacking polling places (of which there were plenty), the elections in Iraq garnered 60% of their registered voters, which is even higher than the 2004 presidential election in America. That is clearly a testament to how much these people have wanted and how long they've waited for a democratic government. Amazing.

Jeff Tweiten, the Star Wars fan who was kicked off the sidewalk due to an anonymous jerkwad, has relocated to the IMAX theater at Seattle Center. While it took Lucasfilm six months after Episode II's release date to make the IMAX version available, Tweiten is rallying in a cause to get Episode III to IMAX on opening day. Despite the fact that it's probably not going to happen, I personally think it's a bad decision to watch the IMAX version first. Though IMAX is a much higher resolution, the frame has to be trimmed to fit the screen, much like with TV screens. Plus, IMAX projectors can't hold a reel longer than two hours; the film has to be edited shorter, which of course is a bad thing, especially for these fast (if not, too fast) prequels. Oh well, his decision.

Well, I'm back in school. While my academic classes today were pretty boring (especially since in astronomy we're probably going to be learning about stuff I learned in elementary school for half the semester), my art classes seem pretty neat. My professor for my Photoshop/Illustrator class seems to be an advocate for obtaining Adobe programs the legal way, while my Graphic Design professor suggests we... y'know... get to know people that know people. Yesterday was pretty much just going over the syllabus and listening to them tell us how great Macs are. I need a Powerbook. :P

StarWars.com used another one of my captions! Check it out here; it's the first one on the list. The other one they picked is here.

107 days until Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith! It's still fucking releasing in France a day earlier!
